Switch to Card Network Tokens

What are network tokens and why they are preferred

A network token represents a payer’s Primary Account Number (PAN) within a card scheme such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, or other major card networks. Network tokens are created for a specific merchant and PAN and cannot be reused by other merchants.

Compared to provider tokens, network tokens offer clear benefits in terms of security, authorisation rates, and subscription stability. They remain valid even when card details change, for example after a card renewal, helping to reduce failed payments.

Migration to network tokens when moving from RaiseNow Manager to RaiseNow Hub

As part of the migration, PAN data and the initial authorisation transaction of an existing recurring payment are transferred from your current payment service provider to a new PCI-compliant data vault. From there, a tokenisation process is initiated, during which the PAN data and the original transaction are securely provided to the card network. This results in the creation of a network token.

For compliance reasons, RaiseNow acts only as a coordinator in this process and is not directly involved in the data transfer. At no point do RaiseNow employees or RaiseNow systems have access to unencrypted card data.

Possible effects on long-failing subscriptions

In RaiseNow Manager, subscriptions are considered active unless they have been explicitly cancelled. Since automated cancellation was introduced only several years ago and did not take subscription frequency into account, some subscriptions may still be marked as active even though no successful charge has occurred for a long time.

During network tokenisation, such subscriptions may be unintentionally reactivated. This can happen because the original authorisation was valid and no explicit cancellation was ever recorded.

To prevent this, we recommend explicitly cancelling outdated subscriptions in RaiseNow Manager before starting the migration to RaiseNow Hub. RaiseNow Manager offers search options to identify active subscriptions for which the last two (or more) payment attempts have failed.
